Abstract

Psychiatric rehabilitation is an essential component of the comprehensive management of individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses, particularly schizophrenia. Although pharmacological and psychological interventions effectively reduce acute psychiatric symptoms, many patients continue to experience impairments in cognitive functioning, social relationships, occupational performance, and independent living. Psychiatric rehabilitation addresses these functional deficits through a recovery-oriented, person-centred approach that promotes independence, social inclusion, and improved quality of life. This chapter discusses the principles and importance of psychiatric rehabilitation, emphasizing the need for early integration of rehabilitation services with routine psychiatric care. It highlights key rehabilitation interventions, including functional assessment, cognitive remediation, social skills training, psychoeducation, family interventions, occupational therapy, vocational rehabilitation, supported employment, and day-care services. The chapter also examines the role of multidisciplinary teamwork and community-based rehabilitation in facilitating long-term recovery and reducing relapse. Evidence from national and international research demonstrates that structured rehabilitation programmes improve treatment adherence, functional outcomes, employment opportunities, community participation, and overall quality of life. The chapter concludes that psychiatric rehabilitation should not be considered an optional adjunct to treatment but an integral component of mental healthcare. Early referral and individualized rehabilitation planning are fundamental to enabling persons with severe mental illness to achieve meaningful recovery and participate fully in society.
