Alcohol dependence syndrome is the most common substance misuse disorder that can cause dependence and causes damage not only to the individuals but also to the society. In this article we will see what the symptoms of alcohol dependence syndrome are and how alcohol affects the people mentally, physically and socially. This article gives good orientation about how to assess the individuals suspected to have alcohol dependence and the major complications that are relevant to be aware of, while treating people with alcohol problems. The methods to assess the patients through motivational interview techniques are elaborated. The relapse prevention strategies and treatment methodologies are given which will help the clinicians while practicing.
